Logan (2017)

From the first film in the x-men series to Hugh Jackman's last appearance as the Wolverine in Logan, the franchise has brought to life a comic book legend.

What we want to know is, throughout the film series has Hugh maintained the same passion and skill he demonstrated in the original x-men footage?

The first X-men movie was directed by Bryan Singer and introduced the all-star cast to our screens, including Hugh Jackman as Logan/The Wolverine.

From here on he develops meaningful yet strained relationships with his fellow X-Men, labelling himself as the 'outcast'. As we know Logan has extensive healing powers and weapons that emerge from his hands, and so his chance of survival through numerous wars has been extremely high, coming out of most of them unscathed. But this, however, has left him with a series of emotional scars as he had to suffer through the torment of watching loved ones die right in front of him as he continued to live on.

The first X-men film is about self-discovery as these mutants who have been taken in by Professor X have been given the chance to expand their knowledge and learn to master their mutations. But of course, the enemy in this film are the humans who are afraid of what mutants can do, we always fear what we don't fully understand.

The other two x-men films follow on from this story and character development takes place as we learn that there is much more to Logan than meets the eye.

In the origin Wolverine film, we learn of Logan's past, the wars he fought with his brother alongside him, the fact that his claws were bone and not metal in the beginning. It is amazing how a back story can shed so much light on a person's situation and it gives the audience empathy towards the man he is in the films.

From this origin film, follows the prequels to the X-men series as we encounter a younger professor x and magneto and learn they were not always mortal enemies, but friends.

The timeline is extremely confusing and Logan only adds to the questions of where each film lies in regard to the series.

The only way Logan makes sense is if you assume that it takes place in the continuity that was fixed by Days of Future Past, only everything still happened the way it did in X-Men 1 and 2, and X-Men 3 was retconned out. Because it can't happen in the First Class timeline, and it means you then need to decide where The Wolverine goes or not, because he ends that film with bone claws. So unless you split the continuity so that it goes, chronologically like this:

  1. Wolverine Origins
  2. X-Men
  3. X-Men 2
  4. X-men: The Last Stand
  5. Days of Future Past
  6. Logan

and then you have:

  1. First Class
  2. Days of Future Past
  3. Apocalypse
  4. The Wolverine
It won't make sense.

Logan is the end of an era, Hugh Jackman has played the Wolverine for seventeen years, it must feel like a part of him has been lost as the wolverine comes to a cinematic close.

Over the years, Hugh has remained true to the character of Logan by using his extensive acting technique and strenuous physical dedication to become 'The Wolverine' time and time again.

When it comes to super hero acting, Jackman is the only actor to have played the role continuously throughout the years, as we know, when playing their younger counterparts in the prequels the roles of Professor X and Magneto were played by James McAvoy and Micheal Fassbender, and the other mutants had also changed.

Jackman revealed to Cinemablend about his final moments as Wolverine:
"It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. … I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out."

And it was the perfect ending for Mr Jackman.

Not all endings are unhappy as Hugh Jackman also told US today about his future as an actor:
“It’s the first time in 17 years where I haven’t known there was something on the horizon, and creatively, that’s probably a good thing.”

It sounds like Hugh is excited for the new prospects that lie ahead, and so are we.
