Doctor Strange - UK DVD release

Magical, strange and magnificently MARVEL-lous, Dr Strange is a well-balanced synthesis of thought provoking plot twists and laughable humour (such as Benedict's attempt at an American accent).

Doctor Strange along with a handful of other Marvel characters is a weaver of magic, he can manipulate time and can access and control magic beyond the realm. But unfortunately, this doesn’t help him with his severe lack of social skills and a gigantic ego.

It was certainly another marvel film masterpiece, the little glimpses of comical genius fit perfectly amongst the plot sequence and were a welcome break from the intense action & fight scenes. The word ‘Strange’ certainly lay true to the film and the special effects were out of this world, with twisting houses and mirrored city images you ended up questioning which way is up.

Doctor Stephen Strange who was played by the talented Benedict Cumberbatch and his character was a first-class neurosurgeon working on breakthrough medical wonders that made him a well renowned medical genius. It was an all-star cast with Rachel McAdam’s as the unappreciated on and off girlfriend and the exotic Tilda Swinton as ‘The Ancient One’.

However, his world is literally turned upside down when Stephen drives to a celebratory dinner he loses concentration and he is thrown from the side of a cliff into the river below, he survives the crash but is left with permanent nerve damage in both of his hands- unable to perform surgery again.

Instead of lying down and accepting his fate he does everything in his power to fix his injury using a multitude of experimental surgical procedures. However, when these attempts fail his desperation grows and he turns to other means, hearing of another patient's miraculous recovery he sets out on a journey that will change his life forever.
He travels to Kathmandu, Nepal to seek a mystical establishment named Kamar-Taj which is under the care of ‘The Ancient One’.

Whilst being taught the lessons of ancient magic he is taken on a journey of self-discovery but this only becomes apparent when he has faced with life threatening situation and he realises that the only way to save the world is to stop thinking about himself.

The soundtrack which was written and composed by Michael Giacchino was a spectacular addition to the whole movie and gave it a strong sense of originality and meaning to each scene. The score had a strong resemblance to other sci-fi films that were top-grossing films at the box office, such as the 2009 Star Trek score (which he also wrote).

The directing by Scott Derrickson was admirable and creative, there were a lot of wide angle shots which means we got the whole picture in one shot, which is extremely helpful when you are trying to see the impressive fight scenes in all their glory.

If you want to see a world turned upside down, an animated and humorous cape and some of the best special effects of 2016, then go see this film, and challenge your own reality.
